A website is a huge investment for any business, especially a small one. So, if you’re currently looking for a new web design agency, there are a lot of questions that you should be asking. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the process, so we’ve rounded up five questions that you should be asking a web design agency before you decide to work with them.

How will my website look on mobile devices?

Now is an era where almost everybody browses the internet on multiple devices (such as computers, tablets, mobile phones, etc.), so it’s absolutely essential that your web design agency will be able to design a fully responsive website for you. On this, we spoke to Liquid Bubble who said: “A responsive website will alter the way it appears depending on which device it’s being viewed to ensure a comfortable and efficient user experience.”

“If your website isn’t responsive, it’s almost guaranteed that you will lose out on sales and user engagement, so having a responsive website should be a top priority.” 

Do you have any references?

Reading references before you make a big investment is always good practice and this is no different when it comes to your web design agency. As a general rule, agencies should always have at least five references to offer you, but there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t ask for more. 

How do you ensure that each project is executed properly?

When discussing your website with a design agency, be sure to quiz them on how they would execute the project and which guidelines they follow.

For example, will they be planning your website according to your business goals? Will they be following coding standards and customising the design to match your specific needs?

For how long have you been in the business?

All agencies have to start somewhere but, with a big investment like web design, you may feel safer in the knowledge that your design agency is well-versed in the industry. It can take years for a web design agency to fully settle into the technology they’re using and become experts in it, so it may be better to work with an agency which has a long history in web design.

Do you have any policies regarding building websites for my competitors?

This is a slightly controversial topic, but it’s always best to know where you stand to avoid a conflict of interests. Dealing with competitors can be tricky and that can be made even harder if your web developer isn’t fully on your team. It’s not a huge problem if the web design agency has worked with your competitors previously and doesn’t have an ongoing relationship with them but, if they work closely together, you may land yourself in a sticky situation if you do opt to work with that agency. It may not be grounds to rule out a web design agency who builds websites for your competitors, but it’s definitely a situation to evaluate.
